Known as Tse Bit'ta'i ("rock with wings"), this volcanic land formation is sacred to the Navajo people. The names Shiprock, Shiprock Peak or Ship Rock are derived from the peak's resemblance to an enormous 19th-century clipper ship. Its 1,700-foot spire is visible in four states and up to 100 miles.
Because of its religious significance, visitors are to remain at the roadway and are not allowed to climb the formation.
