In 2000, Congress designated this 89,000-acre former private ranch, which is located atop a collapsed crater within the volcanic Jemez Mountain Range. Studded with eruptive domes that include 11,254-foot Redondo Peak, the preserve is being developed to explore new ways of managing public lands. Valles Caldera is open to anyone who wishes to study and learn about geology, archaeology, cultural history, botany and wildlife.
